Over the weekend, the students performed at our spring drama event called Murder in the Air which is a comical dinner theater production. The play was presented well as the audience members were active participants throughout the whodunit production. The audience sat at round tables just as if they were at a banquet because we gave them a bit of group work during intermission.

As a group, we asked them to discuss who they felt was the culprit based on clues given throughout the first half of the performance. Rather than simply having them write their guesses down on a piece of paper, I used Poll Everywhere to set up a website that would allow people to vote. I opened the website on the iPads we use at school and then bookmarked the site so that an icon for Murder in Air was on the Homescreen of the iPad. The audience loved this little piece of technology by voting on the iPad and they enjoyed seeing the realtime results projected onto the wall.

To take it a step further, we allowed individual participants to vote for the culpret using their phones.

Individual Text Results

They would text a number and then identify the culprit in their message using a pre-assigned number. The adults and kids alike enjoyed watching the bar graph update by the second and they seemed to text several times just to see the graph change!

It was something so simple but yet so much. We were able to showcase a bit of technology and show off our new school App that is available on the iTunes App Store by placing the Murder in the Air icon next to the SAS App. Just a pinch of marketing…

Ripping, Rolling, Slipping, Sliding… I kind of feel like they are lyrics from a 60′s song but we are talking about a mighty powerful piece of software.

So, two questions:

What types of projects are you seeing from students using Final Cut?

Do you think it’s necessary to have Final Cut Pro for schools or does Final Cut Express do the job?

After months of planning, the Shanghai Student Film Festival proved to be one of the most rewarding experiences of this teacher’s career.

Why?

The number of students from international schools across Shanghai and across the world that were able to participate and be a part of this event were inspiring to me. Elementary students, middle school, high school… all were represented and each and every one of them brought something unique to the festival. From the gregarious student to the shy student, many students were able to explore learning 21st century style by telling stories using film as the medium. As Scott McCloud mentioned in his opening S2F2 speech, films are still a relatively new medium and the potential to discover new things using film is great indeed.

Sky McCloud joins Shanghai students in the workshops

At my school, we had a quarter long elective class every other day to expose kids more in depth to art of film making. Kids made short films in this class, but what I find surprising (and encouraging) is that students submitted films that were either made on their own time OR that were created within the classroom to share their learning. Is this not

Shanghai students celebrate their success

fantastic?? As educators, this is what we want for our students… embedded technology and authentic uses of technology. Just another reason every school school have a tech integrationist….

If you are thinking of starting a film festival in your neck of the woods, I want to share with you something that made our event this year even more special. Students who submitted films from all over Shanghai were invited to our school for the day so that they could attend a mini-conference just for them. They signed up using a google form ahead of time which helped us organize the event. Over 100 students attended interactive workshop sessions about:

animation

green screening

acting in filM

using Foley for sound

If you have questions about staring a film festival in your area, please contact us as we’re more than willing to help out. Tim Bray has the Phoenix Film Festival coming up at the end of April as well – we’re so excited to see film festivals growing in the region!

Students receive a free S2F2 t-shirt thanks to our sponsors

I’ve loved working with David Gran, Mikey McKillip, Jonathan Chambers and all of the others on the board for this event – remarkable educators. We’ll be presenting at the Apple Education Leadership Summit in Hong Kong (April 24-26) and we hope to see you there!

Please start a student film festival in your area…. start small and then watch it grow!

This has turned out to be such an amazing experience for so many of our middle school studentsin my school. This year, more than ever, students are creating content and displaying their knowledge using multimedia software on our Macs. The actual S2F2 event is tomorrow (more on that later) where we’ll have about 400 students from around Shanghai gather in one place to celebrate our films. What is special about S2F2 this year though is that ALL students in our schools have been able to be a part of S2F2 activities.

This week, we have been fortunate to have Mr. Scott McCloud visit our campuses as part of the S2F2 lead up. Mr. McCloud works a great deal with digital comics and he is an incredible storyteller. Students listened to him give a student oriented TED Talk for a full hour and he had them eating out of the palm of his hand. He is a master storyteller! The way he demonstrates the use of an infinite canvas to share stories speaks to me. He even wrote a recent blog post about Prezi – of course, I love that after my first prezi last month!

After the TED Talk, Mr. McCloud worked with all of our 6th graders in their art classes. The 6th grade students are staring a comic unit and they were able to learn from the best during class! Thank you so much to Mr. McCloud for visiting our campus. He’s a professional and better yet, he’s a genuinely nice man!!

As we move into full swing for our 1:1 planning at my school, we find ourselves in the position of celebrating and over-communicating about what we’ve been able to achieve with a laptop cart program. I decided to use prezi as it’s like a Keynote, but it’s much more dynamic to share those big picture ideas.

The big picture about our cart laptop program is that we’ve been able to achieve a lot of in a short amount of time across all disciplines in the middle school… must be the great software and the great technology integrationist!

This prezi presentation has given parents, board members, our superintendent, teachers and our students the knowledge that we use tech everyday across the board… at least that’s the feedback I’ve received so far. Just imagine what we’ll be able to do when every child has a laptop in every class!

I think that’s another prezi!

The main conference site is blocked in China most of the time.

The internet in China can be unreliable and slow.

One of the founding organizers, Jeff Utecht is no longer working in Shanghai.

Teachers could be giving up to nearly 12 hours of their personal time on evenings and weekends to attend the four sessions of our LAN party

We’re pushing past all of the obstacles – they mean nothing to us!

With the help of my colleagues Jonathan Chambers and Simon May, we have or are in the process of downloading all sessions before we meet as a group. Tonight, when the teachers walked in the door we handed them a USB that had Stephen Heppell’s Preconference Keynote on it as well as several of the first sessions posted early last week. We took the internet out of the equations, giving alternate access to the presentations.

Through Skype, we brought Jeff into our conversation live from Bangkok. Jeff then streamed our conversation live on his UStream channel U Tech TV. At one point we had 25 educators from around the world, listening in on our conversation and chatting questions and replies to our real-time conversation. Brian Lockwood from Japan… Allanah from New Zealand – we were having a global conversation around learning. Jeff was and will continue to be part of our conversation.

The remaining obstacle is the amount of time educators are giving out of their personal time. It’s our belief, the k12 Online Conference is a dynamic teaching and learning event complete with engaging presentations that draw life-long learning in for collaborative conversations. Andy Torris recently wrote about this his a recent post:

If you ask me, it is at least 50% the responsibility of the “leader” to have the “follower” want to be engaged.

All of the teachers part of our conversation this evening were engaged because we were all the leaders and we were all the followers – that’s 100% of the responsibility in Andy’s view. Through building these types of Learning Communities, teachers become even more empowered to increase student learning.

Our next Shanghai K12 Online get-together will be this weekend. If you just happen to be in Shanghai please visit our Shanghai K12 Online wiki and sign-up to join the continued conversation. Thanks to Jonathan Chambers and David Gran for our logos over the years. We’re making quite a collection!

If you are not in Shanghai, it’s not too late to organize your own K12 LAN Party. One of the greatest attributes of this conference is the fact that you can organize your mini-conference around your schedule. The presentations are online for anytime-anywhere access. Keep the conversation going – download a flyer today!

Jeff joins our conversation from Bangkok

This week my school was re-accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. These are my notes from the WASC Presentation on Thursday after school and I post them in hopes that some of you may find them interesting! I walked away from this presentation feeling validated and inspired to continue the amazing accomplishments Shanghai American School has achieved under Dr. Dennis Larkin’s Superintendency. I am very excited to be a part of this journey forward. Our charge is clear and WASC provided us a confirmation of our intended direction:

Upgrade our infrastructure to support technology

Integrate technology across all curriculum areas

Track professional development, connecting it to student learning

Develop an school-wide assessment plan

Tech, PD and Assessment – These are a few of my favorite topics in education!

On the techie side, we live streamed the presentation between the two campuses using our polycom video-conferencing equipment so that both the Puxi and Pudong communities could be a part of the presentation… very cool for such a large staff!

———–

Dr. Dennis Larkin opened the joint WASC Visiting Committee Final Presentation on the Puxi and Pudong campuses of Shanghai American School. Tim Carr, Superintendent at American School in Japan (ASIJ) and chair of the committee took the podium for opening remarks and immediately commented that WASC has never had a team this big before during the accreditation process. Through speaking with all constituent groups, the WASC committee and report supports the growth and learning of Shanghai American School…. we celebrate together the phenomenal accomplishments since the midterm visit in 2005.

I will admit that living overseas, I have become a Grey’s Anatomy fan. I love it when they say, “seriously?” on the show. It just makes me laugh.

All day today, I have been saying “seriously?” as I’ve been gobsmacked by the huge undertaking of moving to a 1:1 laptop school. It’s the buzz in international schools lately. Blair Peterson wrote about it beautifully in his latest post on LeaderTalk. Add us to his list because about a month ago, we sent sent out an RFP (Request for Proposal) out to three vendors in China. The RFP was very detailed about what we are looking for with our 1:1 laptop program. The way I see it, we need at least these four things:

Great computer specs

User-friendly software

Technical Support

Professional Development

We aren’t asking for much!

Thee companies submitted their 85 page proposals to us in sealed envelopes last week and then were given exactly one hour today to present to our Technology Action Committee. Now forgive me if I’m sharing too much here, but it’s just my opinion on how everybody did during the presentation:

What they did do…

Company 1: They came in and sold the computer to us by telling us about how the company started, where they are located around the world, and talked a lot about the great deal they would give us on price.

Company 2: They came with a huge team of 8 presenters. They sold the computer to us by addressing education’s specific needs, like a longer battery life. The talked about some of the available software companies out there that we could contact to meet our basic needs. They sold the service to us by promising two technicians on each campus to help troubleshoot. They promised professional development… sort of…. with an extra cost.

Company 3: They sold the computer to us by showing us the software capabilities, technical support and professional development. They were not mutually exclusive as each area depended on the other in their minds. The software was included and we don’t have to contact other companies for the software. The technical support would change with the times – more in the beginning, but always at least one English speaking technician on campus. Professional Development – they covered the development of all education constituents: Administrators, Teachers, Parents, Student, IT People…. all included.

Honestly, there were some tough questions like, how do you help a school of over 2000 students switch from one platform to another platform? Do they really understand the technical support that is going to be required to roll this out properly? To me, some of the companies answered the questions well and I want to believe that if they say they will do something, then they will do it. I’m an optimist!

Tune in – this is a big one. Are we seriously going to do this?!

I had a purple ribbon on my name tag when I walked around NECC ’08 in San Antonio that proclaimed I was International. The conversation went something like this with most people I met:

“You work where?”
“Shanghai, China at Shanghai American School”
“How did you get to do that?”
“It was easy really, you just have to plan ahead!”
“So…you speak Chinese?”
“No. Hardly any at all. My 4 year old daughter knows more than I do.”
“Really! So she starts school next year?”
“No. She has been in a full time program for two years.”
“Wow! How much does that cost?”
“It is part of our benefits package, so essentially it is free.”
“How did you do that again?”
“It was easy really. You just have to plan ahead!”

First the HOW!

How to Work in an International School?
While most people stateside apply for jobs in the spring and summer, you need to start your application process in the fall for international schools. Although international schools are primarily independent schools, you should look at international schools as one giant school district where you need to apply to a recruiting agency before you go to a recruiting fair. You need to establish a file with one or two of these recruiting agencies because most international schools go through these agencies to hire their teachers and administrators.

We went through International School Services when we were first hired in January 2001. You’ll want to start your application no later than early November because there are registration deadlines to register for the recruiting fairs. You can apply online which speeds up the process, but you still must send in transcripts, credentials and references after the online portion. Once your file is complete with ISS you can register for a recruiting fair. More than likely, you’ll need to fly to a recruiting fair. Search Associates is another popular recruiting agency as well as the smaller UNI Overseas Placement Service in Iowa.

Some of the Major Recruiting Fairs for the 2009-2010 School Year:

January 3-5 – SA Sydney, Australia
January 6-10 – ISS Bangkok, Thailand
January 10-13 – SA Bangkok, Thailand
January 16-18 – ISS Miami, Florida
January 16-18 – SA Hong Kong
January 30 – February 1 – SA Toronto, Canada
January 30 – February 1 – UNI Cedar Rapids, Iowa
February 5-8 – SA Cambridge, Massachusettes
February 6-9 – SA London, England
February 8-12 – ISS San Francisco, California
February 14-16 – SA San Francisco, California
February 16-19 – ISS Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

When you start investigating the registration process and the expense that goes into getting registered, flights, and hotels, you may step back a bit. As my husband says to me, keep your eye on the prize. You’ll be putting money out up front, but the benefits package with most international schools will help even things out. It’s not uncommon for international schools to provide a benefits package that will offset your initial expense. This leads me to the why…

Why Work in an International School
The formal benefits package varies from school to school, but you will find the following offered by most international schools:

Housing or a housing allowance

Round trip airfare once a year for you and your dependents

Shipping Allowance

Move In Allowance

International Health Insurance

Retirement Benefits

Tuition Waiver for Children

The informal benefits are numerous and some are difficult to put into words. The travel opportunities are endless. I love telling the story that my daughter at the age of three had to have more pages added to her passport because hers was full. In her first two years of life my daughter was able to visit India, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Thailand, France, Italy, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Spain, Hong Kong… I’m not sure if she’ll remember all of those places but I do know that she has Premier status on United.

Working with international educators has been a truly rewarding experience. Even walking around the recruiting fairs, I realized that most everyone is top notch. More often than not, you’ll find educators that genuinely love kids and whole-heartedly go the extra mile for them. International educators generally don’t have to worry about much. Our class sizes are small (18-20), our rooms are stacked with the resources we want courtesy of the school, we get a generous professional development stipend, we are constantly learning with our colleagues and with our kids, our students are well-behaved and want to learn. Some of the top educational bloggers work in international schools. Julie Lindsay, Jeff Utecht, Kim Cofino, Clay Burrell are just a few listed in my aggregator!

The cultural exchanges you will experience living in another country will be powerful and positively impact you and your family. Picture yourself walking down a street when a car approaches you. A woman in an abaya with her face completely covered rolls down the window while her husband drives in his thobe and guthra. What do you think you will hear? How about “Hiya! Where y’all from?” Summer invited us into her home in Najran, Saudi Arabia for a feast and I’ll never forget it.

What May Stop You From Working in an International School?
The most common reason for not working overseas is family – kids and/or parents stop people from becoming an international educator. In the end, it’s a personal decision, but I will share my experiences and my reasons for letting kids and parents inspire me to become an international educator. For my children, the schools are impeccable overseas. I love working in the same school where my daughter goes to school. When she was a baby, the school had a nursery on site that she stayed in all day so that I could go visit her during my breaks. Now that she’s in school, I cherish the fact that I can run down to experience a class party during the day even though I work full-time. She is a global citizen and has the ear for second languages because of her early exposure. Maddie loves her ayi and they communicate only in Chinese. When she gets older, she will be able to play all of the American sports or participate in musicals or take trips to build homes through Habitat for Humanity or take week long class trips to experience the host country – she is and will be a global citizen.

Parents and family are another reason that people want to stay on the homefront. Let me paint this picture for you though: Because we work overseas, we have been able to have experiences with our family that we otherwise would not have been able to do. My mom came to Saudi Arabia for three weeks to visit us when my daughter was very young. We met my father, my aunt, my uncle, and my cousins in Italy for two weeks over a school holiday. We met my mother and father-in-law in Spain for a week during a school holiday, we then met my father in Spain because he was jelous and wanted to go on the trip! My mom, dad, my husband’s mom, dad and sister all have visited us in China and we even brought my sister over to China for her 30th wedding anniversay. We’ve met family in Bangkok, Hong Kong and the Philippines. The list goes on and on. All of the trips have been quality time with family that have created irreplaceable memories for all. And if that’s not enough for you, summer vacation is a great time to keep the family traditions alive and well!

My relationship is different with my family because I no longer stop by on the way home from the grocery store just to say hi, but I talk with them via video using iChat/Skype and my four year old daughter calls her grandparents on the computer just so she can show them the letter than the tooth fairy left for her. If you’re not careful, your family back home will get techie on you and start creating blogs of their own like my mom-in-law did a few years ago!

I don’t work for a recruiting agency, I write the post simply to share my experience and to answer the most frequently asked question at NECC ’08. If you have more questions, contact me via my blog at Some Tech Sense. I’m happy to help!
